"I did not exist to write poems, to preach or to paint, neither I nor anyone else. All of that was incidental. Each man had only one vocation- to find the way to himself"
-Herman Hesse, Demian
Deirdre West was born and raised amidst the natural beauty of Alaska. However, after years spent traveling the world, she has settled down as a permanent resident of Arizona.
Deirdre knew from early on that she wanted to be an artist. Her formal fine arts training began with private lessons taught by classical realist painter Kamille Corry, whom she studied with for five years. Deirdre also studied at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art in Italy and at The Art Institute of Southern California. She has since won numerous juried art shows and had her work exhibited in museums and art galleries
Deirdre also received a Bachelor of Science in Humanities degree and a Masters in Professional Writing from Northern Arizona University.
She recently has begun combining her passion for travel with her interest in writing. To date she has traveled to over 30 countries and published her first illustrated travel memoir, Balanced Between Shadow and Light: A Painter's Journey, about a solo painting trip she took to Mexico. She has also written a second illustrated nonfiction book Painting a Visible Translation: An Artist's Journey from Italy to Morocco.
As Deirdre traveled, she hired locals to pose as models and spent months painting the changing light on Aztec ruins and the haunting tapestry lined alleyways of Essaouira. She is currently working on her third book about a trip through India.
